Kisoro is located on the southwestern tip of Uganda. The region borders the Republic of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The region lies on mountainous terrain with an average altitude of about 1,980 meters about the sea level. Kisoro is about 78 kilometers from the nearby town of Kabale and 500 kilometers from Kampala city.

LAKE BUNYONYI UGANDA
Lake Bunyonyi is East Africa’s deepest lake found in Southwestern Uganda with a variety of natural wonders that define it as “A Natural Wonder of the World”.
#LakeBunyonyi bares the most beautiful spectacular view with large water bodies and evergreen vegetation cover near the border of Rwanda as Uganda’s top natural treasure.
The lake is framed by lush, green terraced hills that reach heights of 2200m-2478m above sea level and it has also got 29 scattered islands across the water that appear in different shapes that make it magical.
The lake derived its name from a local word “Bunyonyi” meaning a place of many little birds and it’s located at 1962m above sea level.
It’s about 25km long and 7m wide and its depth is expected to vary between 44m that makes it the second deepest lake in Africa and is one among the few lakes in the region rumored to be free from Bilharzia and is safe for swimming.

The Virunga Mountains (also known as Mufumbiro are a chain of volcanoes in East Africa, along the northern border of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Uganda. The mountain range is a branch of the Albertine Rift Mountains, which border the western branch of the East African Rift. They are located between Lake Edward and Lake Kivu. The name "Virunga" is an English version of the Kinyarwanda word ibirunga, which means "volcanoes".
The mountain range consists of eight major volcanoes. Most of them are dormant, except Mount Nyiragongo 3,462 metres (11,358 ft) and Mount Nyamuragira 3,063 metres (10,049 ft), both in the DRC. Recent eruptions occurred in 2006 and in January 2010. Mount Karisimbi is the highest volcano at 4,507 metres (14,787 ft). The oldest mountain is Mount Sabyinyo, which rises 3,634 metres (11,923 ft) above sea level.
The Virunga Mountains are home of the critically endangered mountain gorilla, listed on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species due to habitat loss, poaching, disease, and war (Butynski et al. 2003). The Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey to observe gorillas in their native habitat, is located between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.

GOLDEN MONKEY! These rare elusive monkeys are very interesting to look at. Their gold colour stands out as they rest or move in bamboo trees found in the park. They mostly feed on Bamboo leaves and Bamboo shoots. They also feed on small invertebrates. These beautiful Monkeys only exist in the Bamboo forest of Virunga Volcanoes - nowhere else in the world. In Uganda, they are only found in Mgahinga Gorilla National park south of Bwindi Impenetrable National park, and close proximity to Rwanda and DRC where #VisitKigezi offices are located!

Getting to Kisoro from Kigali or Kampala
Kisoro is accessible by road transport. It takes about 7- 9 hours to drive from Kampala to Kisoro. Different bus companies operate from Kampala to southwestern Uganda. Some of the bus companies include Jaguar, Bismarkan, Horizon, Gateway buses, and the Post Bus. Most travelers prefer Post Bus, which is considered the safest among all the coaches. The price for one bus ticket costs between $10-$30. There are also options to hire a private car from Kampala, which will cost more money but provides more comfort during the journey.
For travelers who wish to transfer from Kabale to Kisoro, there are private car hire services available in Kabale town that will take you to Kisoro at an affordable rate. Try to get more information from the lodge/guest house where you will be staying. Uganda Wildlife Authority also has an information office in Kabale town, which is resourceful in providing information about tourism around Bwindi and Mgahinga. Kisoro is just 78 kilometers from Kabale. There is a newly constructed tarmac road which makes the connection between Kabale and Kisoro a less than 2-hour drive. Similarly, one can hire a local taxi to travel from Kabale to Bwindi Park Headquarters at Buhoma in Kanungu and Rukungiri.
Some people prefer to travel to Kisoro and Kabale via Kigali in Rwanda. A road trip from Kigali to Kisoro takes about 3.5 hours and about 4 hours to Kabale. Upon arriving at Kigali International Airport, some taxis connect to Kigali city, where one can get on public buses heading to Musanze, in the northern province. The public buses from Kigali to Musanze are comfortable, and the journey takes about 2 hours. From Musanze town, there are Matatus to the Cyanika border post (Kisoro, Uganda/Rwanda border). On the Ugandan side of the Cyanika border, there are select hire vehicles that commute to Kisoro town, which is 10 kilometers away. There are also private hire services that connect travelers from Kigali to the municipalities of Kisoro and Kabale.
